Hi Everyone,

I have BYC, I have 10 hens, 1 rooster, 4 pullets and 3 cockrels free range.
I have done lots of reading, questions through people at the county and state fairs, and at our poultry exchanges and a ton of in formation from all of you here at BYC. So I kind of went into my chickens with what I thought where eyes open. **** it all none of these people told me about chicken math! Three broody hens and the rest conspire to have their eggs hatch lay eggs in brood nests with their sisters fussing them the whole time. 25 eggs 7 hatch that was spring. Now I have 2 hens 24 eggs 4 eggs didn't hatch 16 healthy biddies 1 baby got out of the brood area (more on theory later) 4 trampled? under one hen. NOW 2 more hens join the brood party. I am happy, confused, and concerned is this normal for chicken keepers? LOL
I have been married to John for 19 years have 3 children 28,25,and 4. We have 5 indoor cats on 2.18 acres.
Thinking about getting goats and a dog to herd the chickens and the goats but mostly as a pet for my 4 yr old

I will post questions about this season in another post.

Thanks for the welcome to the group,
Mary

Hi Mary and welcome to BYC. Fighting chicken maths is futile - don't bother with the goats - just get more chickens

Well I would do that if you could tell me which chicken breed gives milk?
