Hello, I have perused BYC before and finally decided to join the community. My hubby and I have had chickens and ducks just since last September, so we still have a lot of learning to do. We currently have 1 partridge Chantecler rooster (Cogburn) 1 hen of that breed (had 2 hens originally but one foolishly wondered into the dogs' area). I really love the Chanteclers. We have have 3 Buckeyes, 2 Araucanas, and a New Hampshire Red. We started out with 14 Black Swedish-Khaki Campbell mix ducks but are sadly down to 10. We also have a mixed bag of "inherited" chickens. These are various ages and we can'talk tell who is laying and who is not. We want to cull the non-layers. Other than separating each one is there a way to tell the layers from the non-layers?

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC!
Here is a nice article on evaluating laying hens, it should help on telling if the hen is currently laying, but unless you separate them it doesn't really tell you how many she is laying (unless she is a breed where you can tell pigment especially) http://www.premier1supplies.com/img/newsletter/02-27-14-poultry/Evaluating_egg_laying_hens.pdf
Some people put lipstick or dye on the vents, (that should color their egg shell), hard to work unless you only have a few birds though.

Welcome to the best resource for all things chicken!

I find I can literally spend hours on this site hopping around and reading how to do better for the girls.
