I wouldn't put the hens in with the new chicks right off. When you build the coop, make sure there is a place that you can put birds that need to be seperated. Put the hens in the seperate area so they can see the chicks and get to know them thru some mesh or wire. After a few weeks, or when the chicks get roughly the same size as the hens, you should be able to integrate them. But keep an eye out and make sure the pecking order doesn't turn into bullying.

I picked up the silkies last evening. We've named them Tina Turner and Madonna. Madonna was one someone's pet, and enjoys sitting on laps and getting pets. (Tina Turner doesn't like being touched, and DH says it's because of how mean Ike was for all those years.) I've told all my friends that if I were a chicken, I would be a silky because I was a teenager in the 80's and still love BIG HAIR!
The guy even gave me a free rooster, about 3 weeks old, a cuckoo maran. He doesn't like me much yet. Anyway, I love these silkies and they love my dry warm garage. Hope the coop gets started soon. Take a look at my new BIG HAIR chicks.

Here's another picture of Tina Turner and Madonna "striking a pose". Enjoy. We already have the farm -- we moved into our new house in the middle of a hay field in Feb 2008. We have 30 acres with about half timber and half grass land. My mother lives on the 30 acres next door so my boys have 60 acres of play land. Moving forward into chickens is just our next step into country life. I believe this message board is full of my "enablers" because reading posts is how I knew that I needed those silkies on CraigsList.

Here's the baby roo also. Can't imagine why he just doesn't like me.
