New Chick Here

Welcome! It is always exciting to get chicks. What i would do to soften up your neighbors is offer to give them a free dozen of eggs once your hens start to lay!
Good Luck with your new chicken adventure!

Hi all. I new to the board. I come here from time to time recently since my rooster and some hens are sick or something wrong with them in the last two weeks. We started out with chicks in 2012, 6 Australorps and baby Rooster didn't make it then a baby pullet died two weeks later. Three Silver Laced Wyandottes, 3 Golden Laced Wyandottes. One Golden died in 2013 at 9 months just found her in the coop right around spring time. One Golden Sex Link and a Australorp Rooster.

We had 12 until 2013 when we lost one. Last week we lost our Golden Sex Link and the week before we lost a Australorp. She was being pecking since last year by the Silver Laced Wyandotte so I put her into the coop and found her later under the roosting board on the floor. Australorp Rooster been not feeling well since two weeks ago and keeps going down hill. He's lost the ability to stand up on his legs and got worse as the weeks went by. Not sure what wrong with him and he looks like he might not make it either. Two weeks ago he quit talking completely zip nothing. I read here that chickens feel a loss of another when it dies. We thought that might the reason why Rooster wasn't feeling well. I thought after two weeks went by he would come out of being at a loss over the hens but, he hasn't so, we are not sure what's wrong with him now.

When we got the chickens our neighbor said cool I know about chickens but, then the next morning her husband said your Rooster kept me awake last night and his wife and us just started laughing. I'm new to chickens but Rooster did not keep me awake and I didn't even hear him sound off.

Sometimes when they feel the lost of others they go off feed and wont eat some never eat if he not eating did it start right after losing the hens if not something else is wrong have you checked out his feet chicken do het diseases of the feet and legs from walking around freely in the in soil if you think your neighbors are at fault have wayer tested see if something was put in the water this is the easily way to poison chickens.

Thank you for your reply. I didn't know they can get a disease of their feet. They have an outdoor run area which is half of our garden. Our neighbors are always giving us suggestion and we give them eggs too. It seems after just three years their like family. They wouldn't do it but, we do have other neighbors that we really don't know or even met yet. Rooster is eating and drinking just not allot.
