Hi all, this is my first post. I have 7 new babies, hatched last Sunday. I have 2 questions. 1 is that I have noticed 2 of my babies have diarrhea. It's brown and liquid, but they seem to be eating and drinking (and acting) ok? Should I worry about this? I don't know if it has happened more than once for either of them, I just happened to actually see it happen.

My next question, and it's a dumb one, is about pasty butt. I have worried that a few of them have had pasty butt, but I think maybe it was just poop stuck in the feathers UNDER their butt? How can I tell the difference? Here is the really dumb part, I know pasty butt blocks their butt, but do they only have the one hole right under their tail?

Thank you!

I wouldn't worry about the poop. Here's a good chart to help decide what's normal or not.

Yes, chickens only have the one hole called the vent, but some babies have a "bellybutton" for the first couple days, not really a hole.
Pasty butt only happens when they can't poop anymore due to the blockage but sometimes poop under the butt can help pasty butt start. If it worries you, clean it up with warm water on a q-tip.

Thank you! I had not thought about poop under the butt starting pasty butt...off to clean some chick rears ;)
