Hi all,

We're new chick parents on some country property in Oregon!!! We're starting with a small flock of Orpingtons, (chocolate and gold laced). This BYC forum came up first for almost all my google searches, so I'm excited to be a new member and soak in any/all advice front veteran chicky parents.

Specific interests...
Chicken treats; age appropriate diet additions
Predator prep; how do you protect, and cope with loss
Pecking order; what's normal picking/pecking
Free range
Laying ladies
Sexing pre-crowing
Oregon winters; how to keep them healthy/happy
All things Orpington
Inter-species friendships; cultivating (cats/dogs/goats)

Thanks for the add BYC!!!

A lot of the topics you're interested in can be found under the Learning Center tab, there are some really helpful articles there. Here are a couple to get your reading started:

There are also breed-specific threads you might enjoy. Just type Orpingtons in the Search box (upper left, under the logo) and you'll find them.

And a state thread for OR:

Hope that helps. If you have questions, feel free to ask. There are a lot of friendly, helpful members here.

Hi Debby, nice to meet you. Folks on your state thread can best answer your questions regarding what breeds handle the climate best. What type of coop will best serve them.
Area predators, type of feed for age of birds, etc. Most BYCER's are kind and friendly and will gladly help newbies. Members are the backbone of BYC, very glad you joined the flock.

Any tips for handling birds to make them friendly? I'm trying to hold them daily; anything else that helps peeps like their human parents?
