On Wednesday i got a new batch of chicks in the mail. All looked fine except my little salmon favorolle. One of her eyes was swollen and watery. Looked like some of her floof might have been agitating it and she could see out of it, so i just left her be. It was the same on Thursday, but today i noticed it was wattering so much that it hardened the fluff around the eye and she couldnt close the eyelid. I flushed the area and eye with some warm water and she was able to close it partially. The eye might be even more swollen today. Any advice on how to take care of the eye? should i be flushing it a few times a day? is there any kind of eyewash that would be ok for chicks?

Im scared that its going to get infected, and it would be horrible if she lost it. :(

i attachef a couple of really bad pics, i can take a more in better lighting when i get off work.

Saline is good for flushing eyes. @Wyorp Rock

You could use Bausch and Lomb Advanced Eye Relief eye wash. It is inexpensive, and I have found it at WalMart. Terramycin eye ointment or plain Neosporin ointment can be applied after flushing the eye twice a day. Did they come from a hatchery? There may have been some pecking or it could have gotten something in the eye.

Thanks, i will have to pick some up! Yep she came from Meyer hatchery. I think she might have gotten something in her eye, possibly had some fluff stuck in there. The other chicks seem to be leaving the eye alone, so at least i wont need to separate her. It actually looks a bit better today, less swollen. Here's hoping it gets better.

Sorry I havent updated. This is little Frito now at 7 weeks. Her eye still is weepy, but she didnt loose it. Im not sure whats going on, but other than the eye shes happy and healthy. None of the other chicks have developed weepy eyes, so must not be contageous. Must just be a genetic flaw?
