I have a chick that is roughly 36 hours old. She is still really tippy and not too sturdy on her feet. She rolls on her back and falls asleep that way because she is too tired or lazy to roll back over. Cutest little thing - fuzzy as can be with 5 toes on one foot and 4 on the other! Maybe in sizzle or something. Any tips? I am hoping she will sturdy up. She has gotten a little better and is starting to peck at things, am I just a paranoid mother hen?

Here are some pictures of Puff the Magic Chicken!

In my broody's second clutch, I had a baby who was the same way for several days after hatching.

But by the end of the first week, he was as sure and steady as his half sister.

Then a week ago, I got four Delaware chicks (about 48 hours old at the time) from Cindiloohoo. One of those was a chick who was physically smaller than the other three, and tended to be somewhat unsteady on his/her feet. We have (at least temporarily) named that chick Little Runt.

Anyway, Little Runt was tipsy the first day or two that we had him/her.

But now Little Runt is just as steady and well balanced as her/his brooder mates. Healthy as a horse. At seven days old, little runt was 2 and 1/4 ounces - a full ounce heavier than she/he had been five nights earlier when my wife brought the babies home.

Looks like a silkie...... must be a birth defect for the 4 toes vs 5 on the other foot. She'll get more sturdy in time. The two feet probably feel different and she's trying to compensate. Good Luck!

Thanks for the responses! She is still really tippy and she still sleeps on her back. She doesn't like to walk around much because she falls over, so she lays on her stomach to eat (weird). I think it must be because her feet are different. If you look at her back her wings look like they are at different levels as well, but I think that is just because of the way she walks. My mom is afraid she will keel over dead, but she is eating and drinking, so I am just waiting and watching...
