My jersey giant chick is here , first to hatch but although its very active, it is noisy and it has something like a ''lump''of flesh stuck to its bottom! I am scared of what to do. Anybody experienced anything like that? Any idea what it might be? Please help

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Sorry about your chick! Make sure she's warm. That is the main cause for problems with chicks. Is there droppings caked on the vent? I would try washing it and apply some coconut oil or vaseline. Also, put some ACV in the water.

If you are still having trouble you should ask here https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/10/emergencies-diseases-injuries-and-cures

Thank you for your reply.
I phoned vet and had a chat.
At closer examination it looks like it is nothing to do with the ''vent'' but lower down, much like unabsorbed yolk sac...
I think i just keep an eye on this one, if necessary keep it separated so others will not hurt it.
Not sure if there is anything else i could do....

and i love buff orpingtons too :)
I have three 12 weeks old girls but they are already massive, beautiful ginger things.
When we cuddle they go to sleep in my arms, i just love these moments.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sorry about the chick, X2 on try the Emergencies forum with pictures if you can, It might be an unabsorbed yolk sack. You might try putting the chick in a small jar or plastic tub to let it continue absorbing the yolk sack without being disturbed, not sure if you have seen it, but the Hatching Eggs 101 article talks about open navels and unabsorbed yolk sacks etc and some things to try, about 3/4 way down the page. https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/hatching-eggs-101 this article talks about problems with yolk sacks https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/mushy-chick-disease-yolk-sack-infection-omphalitis Whether or not they make it depends on exactly what is wrong. Good luck with the chick.

Yes, sounds like an unabsorbed yolk sac. Definitely keep the chick by itself for another day so the others won't pick on her. It helps to offer up a baby like this a bit more heat than the others have...somewhere around 97 to 99 degrees until he absorbs the sac. When he recovers, you can put him back in with the others.

Good luck and I hope the little guy makes it. :-)

Oh I know! Buff orps are my favorite breed due to their sweet and cuddly nature!:D

Hi, thanks for links, read it and found it helpful.
Now decided to move that little chick into the brooder as incubator is too humid and crowded.
I hope he/she will be ok
