Hello, Fellow Chicken Addicts:

For a couple of years, my family had dreamed of raising poultry, but circumstances kept setting us back. Several months after we moved to our mini-farm, impatience finally got the best of me. I announced that I was tired of waiting for the "perfect" time to pursue our dream, and shortly thereafter, we ordered our first 5 "girls" from a local hatchery. We have since added 22 more lovely little "girls," plus 6 ducks. The chickens, especially, have proven to be such a joy and blessing to my family, stunning us daily with their elegance, beauty, intelligence, and delightfully quirky personalities. They truly are the polar opposite of everything I had grown up believing about chickens. The other day, my teenage daughter asked me, "What was life even like before chickens?" Without hesitation, I replied, "WAS there life before chickens???"

I look forward to expanding my learning curve as we continue our chicken adventure, and I look forward, as well, to being an encouragement and comfort to those who will face challenges similar to ours.

Last but not least, I would like to thank all of the experienced "chicken people" on this site for sharing their vast wisdom and experience, thereby helping my family along the sometimes-bumpy road we've traveled over the last four months. I honestly don't know where we would be without your help. This site is my go-to resource every time I have a chicken question, which is pretty much every day!

Blessings,

TBirdsTheWord

Well, I tried to post our breeds under the "Jabber" section, but I had too many characters!

We have 27 girls: 6 Easter Eggers, 2 Barred Rocks, 1 White Rock, 1 Partridge Rock, 1 Golden Laced Wyandotte, 1 Silver Laced Wyandotte, 1 Blue Laced Red Wyandotte, 1 Black Copper Marans, 1 Blue Splash Marans, 1 Black Sumatra, 1 Buckeye, 1 Rhode Island Red, 1 Silver Spangled Hamburg, 1 Golden Campine, 1 Black Australorp, 1 Buff Orpington, 1 Welsummer, 1 Barnevelder, 1 Cream Legbar, 1 Dominique, and 1 Speckled Sussex. We also have 6 ducks: 3 Mallards, 2 Khaki Campbells, and 1 Buff. As you can see, we like variety!

The 22 babies are still developing their personalities, so time will tell. As of this moment, our favorite is Petra, our big, sweet Barred Rock from our first brood of 5. LOVE her!!!

Thank you all for your warm welcome! XxMingirlxX, the oldest 5 are about 17 weeks, the "older" babies we guess to be about 3 weeks (they came from a farm store, so we don't exactly know their hatch date), and the youngest 16 are just 6 days old. We must be crazy to have so many, but my family eats LOTS of eggs!

No you aren't crazy, chicken math is an evil thing! :)

I'm guessing you haven't had eggs yet and let me tell you - there is nothing more exciting than opening in the nesting box and discovering someone has begun to lay (and then the devastation if you drop your first egg like me ;) ). It never get old, I discovered my little Bantam Peggy's first egg yesterday and it was so tiny nethertheless she got lots of treats! :)

Be careful the anticipation doesn't knock you off your rocker, it nearly did me! ;)

Eta - Edited because I can't spell! :)
