Hi there,

Two of my standard-sized chickens have mucous in their mouths and are coughing for the past week, but they are both still laying eggs daily and acting normal otherwise, although eating a bit less food than usual. Their coop has plenty of ventilation.

So far I have given each a pea sized dose of Vetericyn in case it’s gape worm but after a couple days there has been no change.

I put VetRx on their throats, nostrils and under wings to help with the symptoms.

Today I got some Denegard — which I’m told can treat several bacterial related respiratory issues? (Research has given me mixed information on the effectiveness of this treatment, so any info would be helpful)

Is there anything else I should get or try? Do you think it’s viral or bacterial?

Any help would be much appreciated. I’ve never experienced this in my flock before.

Vetericyn is an wound care spray and will not treat intestinal parasites. Can you please tell us the correct name of the product you have given at a Pea Size dose?

Most all medications are dosed by Weight.
If you wish to treat for Gapeworms, get some Safeguard 10% Liquid Goat Dewormer and dose the birds at a rate of 0.23ml per pound of weight given orally once daily for 5days in a row.

Tiamulin (Denagard/Tiagard) is used to treat Mycoplasma only.

Symptoms of Mycoplasma including: Coughing, Sneezing, Mucous, Facial Swelling, Bubbles in the eyes. Do you see any of these symptoms?

Are their crops emptying?
Are these birds new to you or have you introduced new birds within the last 30days?
Could these 2 have eaten something different than the others?

I'd work on hydration, check to make sure crops are emptying overnight. Look inside the beak for any lesions or canker.

Apologies, not Vetericyn, I meant Ivermectin! That’s what I gave them a pea size of. I was under the impression I’ll that I do another pea size in 5 days.

I do see the sneezing, mucus, and coughing, but their eyes aren’t swollen or bubbly that I can see.

I put the tiagard in their water yesterday, and it seems like there is less coughing and sneezing today but I’m going to keep a close eye in the situation.
