Hello everyone!

I live in the high desert of southern California, USA. My husband and I recently acquired 10 ducks and a chicken flock consisting of a handsome rooster of a breed I cannot identify, (we were told barred rock, but appears to be something else). His ladies include 1 rhode island red, 1 barred rock, 2 or 3 white silkies ( I think one is a rooster) and what was supposed to be an easter egger, but is a small tan bantam who lays off-white eggs, but has the feathered feet and extra toes of a silkie. We are incubating eggs, which are hatching into the most fascinatingly diverse colors and types.

I don't know much about raising a flock, but we have a safe warm place for them with plenty of space and ventilation. They appear to be thriving and happy, and are laying more eggs than we can eat. I hope to learn and become a better flock mom from this forum.

Beautiful, but a total punk! He enjoys to jump on my back and peck my head when I am gathering eggs. He keeps the peace and protects the flock, so I keep him, but he is not my favorite bird.
You're stealing his unhatched children!

Thank you! And it's true. He builds and tidies the nests for his ladies, and I get the feeling he goes above and beyond the typical rooster duties. It is understandable that he would react strongly to his unborn children being whisked away. Silly bird. He's a good protector though.
