1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I’m fairly new to chickens, though we did hatch 8 baby bantams a few years ago, and they thrived. At that time our neighborhood did not allow backyard chickens, so I had already made arrangements to give them back to our friends that gave them to us to hatch. They were BY FAR the most tame birds in her flock, due to all the holding and spoiling we did with them. My girls would sing them to sleep at night. 💕 We loved every minute we had with them. During Covid I took a chance and asked out association president (and our neighbors on either side) if I could have a flock, keeping within our city’s ordinances. He (and they) said, “Sure!” So our chickens have just started laying as of the first week in August 2020 at 16-17 weeks old. Our RIRs are squatting and should begging laying any day. They’re only 19-20 weeks old, so that’s pretty early for them.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now? I have 9 chickens, though we got our next door neighbors into the deal and gave them 2 to raise and then keep in our coop when they became too big for a brooder. Our neighbor’s dog wouldn’t get along with the chickens, but our neighbor has always wanted some, so they got the experience of raising them from day old chicks in their house and garage in the brooder until big enough for the out door coop.

(3) What breeds do you have? 2 Isa Browns (our neighbors), 2 Rhode Island Reds, 1 Golden Comet (we had 2 but 1 died at 6 weeks from a disease we think :( , 2 Tetra Tints (awesome chickens!!! So friendly, and they’re great egg layers!), and 2 baby Americanas. They’re about 10 weeks old.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Their personalities and the uniqueness of each breed. I’m a breed junky!! I love to read about all the different breeds and hope to have more some day. 😄🐓🥚 I also love the success I feel from raising a healthy, happy flock. I LOVE reading about chickens, coops, health, pretty much anything to do with chickens and ducks and their care.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? I homeschool 3 of my kiddos and I love nutrition.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I’m a practicing Dental Hygienist. I have 7 children, 4 still living at home. We have a dog, Ella, a border collie, 3 sweet cats, an aquatic turtle, 4 fish, and a pet bunny named Velveteen. We also have 2 ducks: a fawn and white runner baby and a male Rouen baby. They’re only 7 weeks old. They’re the sweetest boys. We want a farm or a house with more land to have a bigger flock and maybe more farm animals. I started backyard chickens for my kids, who are crazy about animals.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D
I found BYC after it was suggested to me by my friend in the spring of 2020. I just decided to join because I am constantly following threads. BYC is one of the first to pop up on any subject I type in my search engine and always helps me with the topic I’m interested in. I also love that you have people in all stages of backyard keeping. That keeps it from being intimidating but also provides the answers to most of my questions.
