I just wanted to say hello. I've been wanting chickens for a few years, and now that my kids are more manageable (3&5), I'm ready to jump in. I've been checking out coops on this site so we can get one built in time. I'll probably get chicks from the farm store within 2 weeks. Looking forward to learning all I can to be ready for our new fluffy chicks.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join to our flock. Raising chicks is a wonderful experience for children. My granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loves our chickens. With small children involved, I would recommend going with one of the breeds that has a well deserved reputation for being calm and gentle (potential lap pets) such as Australorps, Orpingtons, Brahmas, Cochins, Sussex, or Faverolles. If egg production is a priority, Australorps are the best layers on this list. Please feel free to ask any specific questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your chicks.

Glad you could join the flock! Good luck with your new chicken adventure. Raising chicks is a very rewarding experience especially if you have children helping, I'm sure they will enjoy this very much.
