I have always wanted to be a chicken farmer. It is a dream that I have had for some time. My family also is supportive, my kids are downright eager. The idea of free eggs is great but more so is the idea of self sufficiency that comes through managing your own livestock.

We finally took the plunge and 3 weeks ago I bought 30 chicks. Soon, however they were all dead. catastrophe!! Undaunted but with heavy heart I purchased another batch of 30 a week later. These 30 also quickly died. Not wanting my dream to die as well I went and bought another 30 chickens yesterday.

I want to be a chicken farmer but it is obvious that I need some help. Perhaps some of you veteran chicken farmers can tell me what I am doing wrong. I think I have it narrowed down to two things. Either I am planting the chicks too deep or too close together.

In all seriousness my family planning to raise chickens in our back yard. The information that is found on this site will help us to be successful. Thanks all.

You might want to pay attention to how much water they are getting. They need full water. Soil should be damp, not not soaked.

Right?

How is water, food, heat lamp? What it sounds like is a draft, if you kept the same group of chicks every time in the same spot it could be that they are overall cold or hot. I would move the Brooder away from any windows or vents. If everything seems normal maybe you just have bad luck with chicks. Try all ready laying hens or pullets.

Unless he was actually planting the chicks...
They were "wheat en" chicks. So no he wasn't kidding.

Could have been Cornish chicks as well I suppose. Maybe I shouldn't assume he was kidding.
