Hello all,
Senor chicken here, from cal. I am new to this site so i wanted to introduce myself.
My wife and I decided after seeing a special on the poultry industry that we were going to raise our own chickens so we would not have to support an industry whose standards we dont agree. Not to say we have anything against the large poultry farmers of america but we prefer our birds minus the hormones. So to make a long story short i bought some books, did my research, talked to some experienced people and made the commitment to get some birds. I made a brooder box with a heat lamp. And built a large coop for my new "backyard chickens".
So now we have 3 cornish rocks(for the meat) and 3 road island reds. (eggs..

I currently have the chicks in my laundry room. The brroder has high solid sides to keep the heat constant so i am not too worried about it getting drafty.
When they are ready, the coop i built is a fenced off area in my back yard.(covered with mesh netting) inside the fenced area i built a medium sized hen house. And for my nesting boxes i used milk crates with the front cut off and a nice bedding of straw. Feeders and water are ready to go when the time comes. I plan on getting more chicks next year so i wanted to make my space as large as possible in my backyard. I will post pics of my coop/run later.
It has already become a family affair as my two young sons helped my build the coop and brooder. as well as my baby girl helping momy feed the chicks in the brooder. I can see why this is a lifelong love for alot of people...............we love it already

soooooooooo hello backyard chickens Senor Chicken is here........

The babies sure are fun aren't they? My kids love this crazy chicken (and for us duck) thing. They have helped with everything, even with chicken plucking when the time came. Congrats, and welcome!

I'm in Oregon, I should say "hi neighbor!"
