I have been wanting backyard chickens for ages.... Specifically, three hens. A buff Orpington, a Silkie, and a uniquely patterned breed, such as one of the laced Wyandottes. Two weeks ago I brought home my first hen! Serendipity is a 6 month old black Silkie, and she's quite pleased to be held and petted, once you can catch her.

She started laying eggs once she settled in, and now I have 5 cute little dainty eggs in the fridge.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Nice pic! Looks like you are enjoying your hen.

Congrats on getting her and I hope you can get some more too! She definitely will want some other chicken company so try and find her a friend as soon as possible. But, I'm glad she has settled in so nicely!

Welcome to BYC!

Thanks for sharing a photo, it looks like you're enjoying your new little girl. Congrats on those eggs too.

Nice to have you join us!

Welcome to BYC. You may want to check out the "Silkie thread," and soak up some breed knowledge and get to ooh and aah over chick pictures, etc.

There's a Silkie thread? Oooooohhhhh...

I have news! I got my hen 3 friends last night! Another (blue this time) Silkie - "Penelope", a white Sultan - "Camilla", and a very attractive silver and black hen described as a Birchen(?) - Brigid. Soooo excited!

Congrats on the new birds!

I feel like updating my flock information, even if I don't love the change. Le sigh... Here goes.

My four girls were the happiest four little hens! But tragedy befell my flock, and now Princess Penelope, my sweetest little blue Silkie girl, has passed away. Not only am I down to three girls, but two of them were very seriously injured and are still recovering (in my air conditioned guest bathroom!), leaving my original (frightened but UNinjured!) hen Serendipity to spend week after week outside in the blaaaazing heat by herself, bored and lonely. Thankfully, Brigid and Camilla are well enough to play (monitored *and* within a run) with her outdoors now. Today we built them a run and set them inside. Yay! They all loved it! They didnt seem to mind at all that they werent technically free ranging. :)
