Morning.

I have wanted to keep chickens and move toward semi self sufficiency in future.

However for years I have been living in an apartment in London, England, so it hasn't been an option.

We have now purchased a property and will relocating to the Austrian alps around Christmas time. Once there we shall hopefully have the space to start growing things, and primary start keeping chickens.

The garden is around 1000m2 (1/4 acre). So a decent sized garden, but by no means 'land'. We would be looking to keep around 5 chickens to start with, starting next summer.

Im sure I will have several questions over time. Any tips of keeping chickens in a varying cold and hot climate would be great

Welcome, and keep us posted on your move and chicken adventures.

Moving to the Austrian mountains sounds quite literally like the most amazing thing I've heard all day!
We do hope it will be an amazing adventure. Now I need to brush up on how to ask for chicken supplies and coop building material in German!

I think u may want to focus on researching cold hardy breeds and coop design. Also..ur garden will need to be fenced in, otherwise the chickens will dine on your vegetables

Yes we wont be able to free range the chickens i'm afraid, so the coop will need to be fully fenced in. A) so the don't eat all the edible plants B) the actual garden isn't fenced in on all sizes, and it wont really be possible do to house location and access etc

Thinking 3m x1.5m run if possible. Or would that be too small? for 5 chickens max

4ft x 4ft space per chicken..specially if u will keep them in an enclosed coop...bigger is better...you will have less behavioral issues and fussing.

Sorry, I rarely use ft, as use cm/m in the UK. Trying to work that out.

ok for 4ftx4ft min. 4ft =121cm

So min 150cm/1.5m2 per chicken.

So a 1.5m or 4.5ft wide coop should be fine, and then need to decide on length by how many chickens. Was thinking to raise hen house also so they have the space underneath also. Like I said, i think 5 chickens will be maximum really, but probably will start with 3 and see how much space they have first.

Do you have any recommendations for hardly cold weather chickens? they need to be cool enough for the hot summers though also which is my worry, that they will then overheat
