Hi all, I got my first chickens yesterday. 3 commercial, 2 Sussex stars , 2 polish.
I bought them if a breeder near me, he said they are all about to start laying but none if them have laid their first egg yet. I have made a 35ft square run with a coop.
Within 20 mins if them being in the run I found an egg!!! It was definitely from one of the polish as it was small and pure white! It was laid in the corner against the wall, I'm guessing this is because they didn't know where the best boxes where. But I have heard I may need to teach them to lay in the best boxes. If I do can I not just move the laid eggs to the nesting boxes and leave them there for a day?
Also I am not usually home in the day, if they lay in the open and it's sat in the sun all day will the egg be good to eat?
Is it likely the farm lied about egg laying and this wasn't its first?? As it was perfect shape and I thought the first few are usually weird shaped
