Hi everyone! My family and I recently moved out of the city and into the country so we could slow down our pace a bit and enjoy a quieter life. I've always wanted to have a little farm so we are starting with some birds. We have 18 chickens, 12 guineas and 5 ducks. The chickens are 4 weeks old and the breeds are Rhode Island Red, Rhode Island White, Barred Plymouth Rock, Cherry Eggers and Golden Comets. The Guineas are also 4 weeks old and are Royal Purple and Pearl Grey. 4 of the ducks are around 8 weeks old and they are a mix of Cayuga and Rouen. The remaining duck is a male Rouen who literally showed up on our property two days after we brought the babies home so we have no idea where he came from or how old he is. Apparently the word got out that we have this farm thing going so it's a free for all!
I have been referencing this site for months through all my research so hopefully I can continue to learn everything I need to know to keep all my birds happy and healthy.

You may want to post on the "duck thread." I'm wondering if he is a wild duck, if he will try and lure your birds away or harm the young ones. The avian virus is also spread by wild ducks and geese, so another reason for caution.

Thanks! I will look into that. So far he's been here for 3 weeks and hasn't been a problem at all. I've watched them closely each day and the 4 babies seem to work well as a team against the big one if he starts to overstep his bounds with them. Where we live seems to be a "dumping place" for people's unwanted pets and animals, dogs are found out here almost daily dumped by their owners. The lady I got our baby ducks from lives about 1/4 mile from me and had a duck just like ours show up in her pond a week after ours showed up so we think someone is dumping them back here. Thank you again for the warning, I am keeping my eyes open for signs of anything bad.
