(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

I am new to chickens. We bought our house in August of 2019 after living in a small town. My husband started talking about having chickens and I really didn't want any more animals/responsibility on top of the children and the dogs. Then in October, he got a promotion at work and I became a stay-at-home-mom. We started talking about our garden and chickens (again) in December. Once the holidays were over and I started looking at little ones and found that we could have various colors of eggs I got really excited. We put in our order with MyPetChicken in January. I read 2-3 books and joined many groups on Facebook to ask all sorts of newbie questions.

When COVID-19 hit and they started shutting things down in Ohio we were worried that we wouldn't be able to get our chicks in the mail. So we took a trip to Rural King and bought 6 chicks in mid-March. Our chick order came on April 14th. So now I have two brooder setups down in the basement. One for the babies and one for my "teenagers".

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

I now have 12 chickens. I am told that is how chicken math works. But if you count by breed only I have 6 or 7.

(3) What breeds do you have?

2 Welsummers, 2 Light Brahmas, 2 Buff Orpingtons (all bought at Rural King). They were about a week or two old when I bought them.

2 Green Queen Easter Eggers, 2 Easter Eggers, and 2 assorted brown layers (the breeds weren't marked on the packing slip so I might need some help identifying what I do have. These babies were a day old when I got them.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

I never knew there were so many different breeds or egg colors!!! I almost gotta get them all!

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

When I was younger I had hobbies. Now I have kids. I am starting my first garden in a long time. We started it from seed and most of those have died. I am learning. I am also interested in identifying the plants that came with the house. Not many flowers have popped up, so now I am on a kick with planting flowers.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I am married to a great guy! I met him about 7 years ago. We have lived together for 6 years and have been married for almost 2 years. We have 3 boys aged 16, 4, and 2. So I have my hands full sometimes. We also have a senior Boxer dog and a 1 year old Cane Corso, who has shown to be a protector of the older chicks when I put them outside in the baby play yard when we are working outside. I have worked many different jobs. I am a licensed cosmetologist and the last job I had was as a receptionist in a salon.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

I joined the BYC group on Facebook when I first started with our order in January. The group was recommended by a friend who also owns chickens. While looking for coop designs and various ideas through Google it would always bring me here. Now that I am a legit Chicken Mama I felt that I should join the BYC community before I drive my Facebook friends nuts with chicken posts!

Thanks for having me!

You are going to have a lot of eggs!

The older child should be a big help around the place too
