New chicken mama in Central PA

Welcome to BYC. I wouldn't worry too much your girl will get the hang of laying in the box eventually. Just put a couple of fake eggs in the nest. I have some who drop eggs off the roost every time it storms. (And they are not young. )
Be sure and clean up any egg mess as soon as possible so your hens don't get in the habit of eating it.

Hello there! I live in Central PA, and have 6 chickens who are now 16 weeks old! 2 ISA Brown, 2 Black sex linked, and 2 colored eggers assorted. I started with a backyard flock as a hobby for my family and I to enjoy together. My husband didn't want chickens but is now completely in love, and my almost 2 year old loves them so much. I joined this platform to get extra information, and help from experienced chicken owners. I did a TON of research on them before getting them, but have learned since having them and watching other peoples posts that crazy things come up with them too. So I want to do my best to learn everything I can, so that I am the best chicken mama I can be!! I have gotten 2 brown eggs, and now 2 blue eggs already in the last week. unfortunately whichever colored egger is laying the blue eggs is waiting until nighttime when she is on the roost to lay them, so they are breaking 😭 I plan to lower the roost until she gets used to laying but I am worried this will continue. I also am purchasing Oyster shell to help strengthen them because they seem a little thin shelled. My brown eggs were laid in my run, and haven't been laid again since. I have fake eggs in the nesting boxes to try to get them to go there. Fingeres crossed they start figuring this egg laying thing out, and get more consistent 🤞 Pictures for an idea of set up. ANY HELP/INPUT IS APPRECIATED ♥️
Edited to add: The photo of them in the coop is from when it was still super cold out and they first moved into their coop! Stopped turning the heat lamp on at night once the temp stayed in the 40-50's at night.
Welcome to BYC!! ❤️

Hi @Jojomarie23 :frow

I just wanted to let you know that I have been raising chickens for about 6 years. I have never purchased oyster shells. After eating the eggs, I clean and crush the shells, then feed them to the chickens as needed. Our chicken's shells are thicker than the store bought so it seems to work.

I am not sure how everyone else feels about this or if they prefer oyster shells.

I enjoyed the pics.

Welcome!
