We became chicken parents may 28th 2020
Our chicks were either 2 or 3 days old when we brought them home. We don't know the exact hatch date, but around the 25th or 26th.

We decided to get 6 and decided on 3 different breeds
2 buff orpingtons
2 black australorps &
2 plymouth barred rocks

For the most part it's been pretty simple, and we love watching them and caring for them. However I've had countless sleepless nights worrying over these little babies. Hoping and praying I am providing them exactly what they need.

The only minor issues we experienced this far is both my barred rocks getting a small amount of poop stuck near their vent, thankfully I only had to clean them once and they've never had the issue again.

they all seem to be very active and healthy, I do get more orange foamy poos then I think is normal but I do have 6 chicks in here so maybe they're all on a different cecal poop schedule. Idk but I lowered the temp again to see if that helps.
Cool side is currently ranging between 75 and 78 depending on the time of day and under the heating plate is about 80, sometimes 85 also depending on the time of day. They seem completely comfortable with their temps. And show no signs of being too chilled or too hot.

We have dreams of a future homestead and hope to buy some land this year or next :)
we have 3 fur babies, one blue healer Pitt mix named piston he's 12 and still active and healthy as ever, one mastiff boxer golden retriever mix named olive she'll be 2 in September, and a tortie shell cat named pumpkin she's about 5 or 6 now

we also have 2 lizards, one nile monitor and one tiny desert lizard that I saved in the winter that accidentally got transported in a shipment somehow.

I guess that's it! I am so grateful for this forum and community of chicken peeps
:frow:love

Welcome to the wonderful world of raising chickens! It's a fun hobby.

I used to live in Henderson, NV. Please make sure you follow the chicken ordinances for Henderson as we found neighbors are pretty quick to object if they can. Also, shade shade SHADE and water during the summer months affectionately known as "Hell."

Enjoy your babies! They grow quickly!

Oh yes I checked you're allowed 7 hens no roosters, and they passed a new law some years ago now that you don't need neighbor approval anymore! Plus I live nextdoor to a lady who breeds and keeps alot of birds, they're super loud birds so I'm not worried about my 6 chickens 🤣

Yes water and shade are our main focus, as well as good ventilation in the coop!

Good to hear! I moved out of NV about 7 years ago, so probably ordinances eased in the interim. I had all the neighbors' approvals except for one person at the very edge of the 350-foot requirement, so I was nixed on having a coop. THEN my next-door neighbor got an Easter chick rooster (big no-no as you know) that started crowing and everyone thought I had the illegal chicken. Got lots of nasty looks until they got rid of it.

hehehe -- little did the neighbors know that even back then I was a hatch-aholic and usually had an incubator going. Can't keep a chicken lover down!

Oh man people can be so vicious! Glad you didn't let them bring you down!!
