We are a large foster family with 6 children currently at home. We have always wanted to have chickens but we’re not allowed where we lived. This winter we moved to a house in the country so we could give our kids experiences we felt they were missing. We are busy building our coop and planning our garden!

We planned originally to order 6-8 chicks. Then we started planning our coop and decided to go big with both the coop and the run and get double that because if we lost a few along the way or ended up with a rooster or two we would still hopefully have plenty of eggs. Plus ordering 15 makes it a better deal right? I ordered 4 Austra white because my brother has had them in the past and they were friendly, 2 barred rock, and 2 RIR. Plus I added 7 rainbow pullets and they came with 8. We also picked up 3 Brahma locally - lite, buff, and dark.

I feel an adventure ahead of us!

Hello and welcome to BYC and congrats on your new littles.

Here’s a good link where you’ll find lots of information on almost every aspect of keeping chickens - from coop building ideas, to incubating eggs - https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/

There’s a link on the page above to the Learning Centre - it’s a great resource. If you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

Each week, various topics are discussed, which can also be a great resource - https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/topic-of-the-week-thread-archive

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock when they arrive, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)
