Hello, I’m brand new to raising chickens. I bought 5 silkies and 1 cochin about a month ago, and I’m trying to learn everything I can! They are the cutest little fluff butts!! My Cochin turned out to be a rooster, not sure about the others yet, and I hope he doesn’t become a problem because he’s such a good little guy, friendly and not skittish, he’s my favorite actuallyBut I’m reading everywhere that roosters become jerks!
Also does this mean I will be having more chickens? My brother is almost done with building the coop which nicely fits the 6 I have, I really didn’t want any more chickens!
I’m sorry for my ignorance on this! Lol.
I live in central NY (way upstate) and the winters are long and cold. We put some insulation in the coop, no heater, will this be enough for them?
And how do you keep their water from freezing? I know summer is just starting, but I’m already worried about winter.
Also people have told me that if I let them out to free range they will come back around dusk. Is this true? Or do I need to train them somehow? I’ve been letting them out already under supervision but they haven’t slept outside yet. Almost ready for that .
Anyway, if anyone has any advice/instructions to share I’d appreciate it! Thanks!
Chickens: Nugget, Riggie, Marsala, Chipmunk, and Penguin
Rooster: Spot
