What a great organization! I live in Evergreen, Colorado and have just finished our fortress of a chicken coop. We pick up 8 10 week old chickens within the week. I've read several chicken books and watched tons of video clips but have not come across anything regarding the best way to introduce a family dog to the chickens. We have a very gentle 2 year old male Golden Retriever. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you in advance!!

Does your fortress of a coop have a safe run or enclosure? If your dog can be around the chickens while they remain safe, they'll get used to one another. If you hang around the chickens within your dog's sight he/she will get that they belong.

Our dog is a nutz kinda lab mix who goes crazy when anyone walks down the street in front of our house and god help any rabbit or squirrel who tries to get through the backyard but she quickly got that the chickens belonged. Even when a friend came with her high-energy little dog there was a lot of yapping and flapping initially but things settled down pretty quickly.

Be there while they're getting used to one another! That's important. You'll see anything that needs to be corrected. And if you don't feel safe about it, you won't let them be together unsupervised until you feel better about it.

Well we have had dogs and chickens for a while: the chickens do need a sanctuary in case the dogs forget that they aren’t supposed to chase them. I wouldn’t expect to put them together until the chickens are at least 4 months old. As the chickens get larger dogs will get reminded that chasing the chickens can be painful! My sister lives in Evergreen, great winemaker at Creekside!
