New chicken mama!

Hi all,
So happy to join this amazing group! Thank you for having me! We are first time chicken owners and very excited to have them! We recently moved to an area where it gave us enough space to own chickens. We were planning on starting our flock in spring. After learning more and deciding on what breed would work best for us since we have a 10 and 11 yr olds who want to help take care of them.
We stopped into our tractor supply last weekend and a woman had dropped off 2 beautiful chickens with food and dishes. Unfortunately the associate did not get much information. So they did not know breed, sex or age. Being very inexperienced we did not know enough but willing to learn all we need to! Our kids talked us into taking them, surprise there! lol We want to give them the best care we can to them. We do want to get 4 more chickens in the spring so all the information about them we can get now will help for spring choices and their care. We believe they are Austrolops but could be totally off base! This newbie is so happy to be here!!
Well Mamma that is a good story. I'm excited for you all in this adventure. Where in general are you located? R. E. I'm in SW Nebraska; it can get pretty hot 103,* and can get very cold so my breeds are chosen accordingly. Welcome here If love to try your cheeses!

Welcome to BYC. If you want to make sure your run is predator proof, cover it with 1/2 hardware cloth.
Thank you! We doubled up hard wire netting and secured it for now. We are getting a very large all wire enclosure that will fit their coop inside of it and give them a lot of free space outside. Their current setup was a quick stable setup for them not our dream space quite yet.

Thank you! It has been a wonderful adventure so far! We are western upstate NY we have gotten high 90s but this last week has been low 70s with nice breezes. We live on top of a mountain with lots of trees for shade to help keep them cool.

What a great intro and hello! A very big welcome to you! And there's nothing wrong with inexperience at all. We were all once inexperienced. So it's okay. Once you feel at home, please post pics, if you would like, and people can help determine breed and sex, and might also recommend some specialized info about how to care for these little guys. :)

Hm. I had an intro. Once. But they moved it. I think because it was far too lascivious for the mainstream view. Oh no, wait. That was the Marquis de Sade. Uh what's the difference. Title? Oh some such like Eurochook Says Heya. Far too racy.

Seriously now--(that was a joke?)--you are in the right place for good information for breeds and nutrition and all manner of things, cooling in the warm and special diet additions; how to keep them warm in the cooler weather (if it comes). Great information abounds! (It will be mostly coming from me. Yup, ahuh. Modesty counts for everything these days, hey).

But Seriously, (there's that word again), there are some very knowledgeable folks around here and lots of good resources are on-board here. If I may, please allow me to show you around--oh, there's where the lunch room is; and here's where you may hang your coat and hat.

A big welcome to you!
