I am a new chicken mama who is enjoying raising may girls. I live in North Carolina and they free range in my fenced in back yard during the day but get locked into their chicken coop/run at night. I have found lots of information on this sight that has been helpful to me in my new endeavor. I have 10 hens and 3 of them have started laying eggs. The others should start soon and I am just excited every time I get a new egg. I love petting my chickens. Since I can't have dogs because of severe allergies I have found the chickens help me to stay active and help me when I start missing my late husband too bad.

Hello! I'm new here too. I'm so sorry for your loss. I know it can be hard at times. Chicks are such fun, and good for future eggs too ;).

Allergies are no picnic. My dog crazy friend grew up without pets until age 10 because her teenaged brother was deathly allergic to fur (dog, cat, hamster, etc). Then a lady from Mexico told her mother to get a young chihuahua puppy to sleep on the brother's pillow at night. I don't know if his age was a factor but my friend's 10th birthday chihuahua puppy that slept on her brother's pillow at night did seem to cure him of his fur allergies. He was as cat crazy as his sister was dog crazy, and would often come to my house to visit our cats from then on, and his allergies were really gone.

Not that you need a puppy, haha. It's just a story from the past that I find remarkable.
