Hello all,
Names Rodney and I'm here to raise some chickens. So far got a small egg flock planned but, I think I'm going to be heading into the meat bird side of things in a month or two. We have a meat processor nearby thats really cheap, so all I have to do is raise them and take em to get processed.

Been wanting to raise chickens for a few monthes, and last month I walked into a tractor supply store with baby chicks and ducklings. Decided to do some research first, convinced my wife and now I have 8 silver laced wyandotte chicks due to be delivered next week. Bought a sweet coop off of cconly and I'm off and running. My wife and 13 year old daughter are excited to add some new members to the family, as am I. I'm really excited to take more control over my food supply, and provide better quality food for my family. I grew up on a dairy farm, so farmings kind of in my blood and thats part of why I decided to start my own backyard flock.

I really like the site, and used it to help me find a coop and chickens that are going to fit my budget, needs and wants.I originally wanted to go with ancona's, but they seem to be either sold out or only available from breeders with a 15 bird minimum order so thats why i chose the SLW's. I like the looks of the birds I got, they are supposed to be friendly and cold hardy, which are definite musts where I live.

thanks for reading my ramblings, sure it won't be my last post.

If you are planning to butcher and eat the chickens at some point, the SLWs, being heavier, are a better choice anyway than the Anconas. Also, they are friendier, more docile, and much more cold hardy. Black Australorps would also be an excellent bird for your purposes.

I won't be butchering the SLW's. I'll be buying a broiler breed for that. The SLW's will be a long term addition for eggs only. The deal I had with my wife was I wouldn't butcher the egg birds because she knows she's going to grow attached to them so I'll be doing a separate batch of meat birds later where she's not going to be part of the process so she doesn't get attached.

SLW's are such pretty birds and great layers too. Enjoy all your poultry adventures and welcome to our flock!

Got my girls the other day. they were a day late as they got sent to cleveland ohio for a day. They are eating and drinking really well, and all seem to be growing. Trying to keep them social, picking them up, spending time with them and talking to them. They really are enterttaining so far. My wife didn't want birds, but now that she has seen them i can tell shes falling for them. She's such an animal lover she can't help herself.
