Good morning everyone!
I am so excited to join this backyard chicken community!
I am very very new to chickens and wouldn't have even thought about making the chicken journey without this pandemic! We got our 6 baby chicks (2 easter eggers, 2 barred rocks, and 2 New Hampshire reds) 3 weeks ago and every minute with them has been a hoot for my family of 5! My husband just finished building their permanent coop yesterday (so happy I married a country boy) and our 3 kids (ages 13, 6, and 5) just can't get enough time with our little chicks!
My kids had been begging for a pet for years and I have been hesitant about getting a dog. We definitely needed a starter pet. I originally thought having chickens would be easy! We could just leave them to their own devices and they would be fine but boy was I wrong! These little girls need lots of attention and love and our family has gladly stepped up to the plate! The kids have been out there in the backyard a minimum of 5 hours a day (Our TV has been off!) and so much love and attention has been given to the chicks!
So far my favorite thing about the chicks is just "hanging" with them! They are all so different and have different personalities and demeanors. I honestly don't think I've ever seen my kids so happy! Even my teenager can't wait to wake up in the morning to check on the chicks!
Before the chicks, the kids were constantly whining and although they have a large trampoline and playhouse, they refused to go to the backyard by themselves! They have definitely become more mature and independent in just 3 weeks! Before the chicks, the kids begged for TV and Fortnite time and now they are begging to feed the chicks! They are knocking out their chores so they can go spend more time with them! I am so excited that these chicks will be with us forever and have encouraged others to do the same. My husband and I are both educators so we have a while left before we are out of the house full-time so we will be spending as much time as possible with our new family members!
