I live in Illinois and have 7 chickens that are just now laying eggs! I have a Lavender Orpington, Exchequer Leghorn, White Crested Blue Polish, White Cochin, Blue Andalusian, Blue Australorp, and a mysterious Red chicken that lays a lot of brown eggs!!! I don't know what type she is because the Hatchery sent an extra! They are all named after female scientists. (I am a science teacher.)

I love my chickens; they are sooooo funny and they relax me. I have never owned chickens before so this is first time for me. BYC has helped me tremendously in getting my flock established and healthy!!

Welcome to Backyard Chickens! We are glad you joined the flock!:welcome BYC is a helpful site providing all of the information you need to know about poultry. There is always space for members on the BYC roost!:highfive: Hope you enjoy it here as much as we all do!
Happy New Year!

I love that they are all named for female scientists. After all, chickens seem to spend most of their lives delving into and checking out new things.

My daytime free-rangers just learned that they can escape windy weather AND scare the crap out of me by hiding inside the hollow concrete steps that don't quite line up with the house's foundation wall. They remained hidden and quiet while I wandered around like a lunatic yelling, "Chick, chick, chick." It worked so well the first time, that they repeated it again with similar results. Finally, they have successfully trained the crazy lady to look in the right place for them.

From the sounds of your girls, it must be a beautiful, diverse group.

Welcome to BYC, and here's to a happy new year of chicken raising!
