Hello everyone!

My husband and I recently made a big move from the city to a 1-acre lot in the country, right next to a beautiful state park/forest. We have two adult children and six dogs, so life is quite lively!

On August 31, 2024, we finally got our first chickens—eight adorable 3-week-old chicks! I've been dreaming of having chickens for a while, so this is incredibly exciting for me. However, while researching how to care for them, I came across some rather daunting stories about potential issues and realized that not all vets are equipped to care for chickens.

That’s how I found this group, and I’m so grateful to be here! It’s comforting to know there are knowledgeable chicken moms and dads who can offer advice and support. Thank you for being here and sharing your experiences. I’m looking forward to learning from all of you!

Hi Michele, welcome to the online flock here at BYC and congrats on your new chicks!

As far as dealing with health issues and injuries, I think it's helpful to define your goals ahead of time and what you are (and aren't) willing to do for your chickens. When we got chickens, my husband and I agreed that we would not be taking them to the vet, but that we would do whatever we could for them at home, as long as it still made sense from an animal welfare perspective. The folks here at BYC have been a big help when facing any kind of challenge.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

This is definitely the place to be when you keep poultry! Should your flock run into any health issues, searching through our archives or starting a thread in our Emergency forum should help give you the info you need. Most issues with chickens are pretty common.

Make yourself at home here and welcome to our community!

Hiya, Michelle, and welcome to BYC! :frow

Don't worry as you'll see the majority of folks post when they have issues with their chickens, not when they are healthy and happy. To see some positive posts, there are forums like https://www.backyardchickens.com/forums/pictures-stories-of-my-chickens.39/ where you can find those. You can make a page there for yourself too if you wanted to.

There's always someone around to help answer questions if you have any. :)
