I am in Hot Springs Arkansas and have had my feather babies since the beginning of February. I have been a cat mom for a long time and finally had my back yard 'cat fenced'. I can let my cats out with no fear of them wandering off after a bunny or being hit by a car. I was worried about ticks and other creepy crawlies and didn't want to keep my cats medicated. My wife's caregiver has chickens so offered me a 'mean' rooster named Napoleon and 2 hens who I named Josephine and Desiree! I was very concerned about a cat/chicken war, but after a couple of hard pecks to the head everyone is coexisting peacefully. I then got talked into incubating eggs for the same woman! We each had 3 eggs to hatch, and she graciously gave me hers, sooo I have a 6 pack of 10 weeks old chicks with half being roosters! Of course I am completely in love with all 6 and have no idea what to do with the boys... I am amazed at how much I love my chickens. Who knew they were so smart, and stupid at times. Caring for them has been a challenge since I depend on a wheelchair to get around. But I thrive on doing what people tell me I can't or shouldn't do. Hopefully I will learn a lot from others and maybe offer a few things I've learned.

Welcome to BackYardChickens! So glad to have you here in our wonderful community of friendly, helpful, knowledgeable people! Keep an eye on your chicks, they're more at risk from cats than full-grown hens are!

Welcome! My chickens and cats are getting along way better than I expected too. I'm glad you have been able to takes care of them. I have some moderate handicap issues, not needing a wheelchair, but I've been so lucky to have family help me with the heavy lifting. Isn't it so much fun to watch them wandering around, interacting and just being their chicken selves?
