(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

My family and I are very new to chickens. My dad had recently talked about possibly building a coop and adding a flock, but our plans were accelerated when my mom heard about a large number of chickens that needed rescuing. We built the coop and run, and picked up the chickens on Saturday the 16th.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

Our family rescued fifteen hens.

(3) What breeds do you have?

I don't actually know what breedㅡor breedsㅡthe hens are. They are all missing a large number of feathers, so I've had a difficult time determining what they might be.

Their feathers appear to be various shades of brown, and they lay various shades of tan eggs. Most of the feathers they do have are still-developing pin feathers.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

We are still determining this, as we haven't had them for long. I personally like listening to their soft clucking and watching them forage in the run. Work permitting, I'd like to try spending time in the run with them and helping them to become more friendly.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

I own several small parrots, so I'm not new to bird keepingㅡthough chickens and budgies are extremely different in their needs and what they offer. It's been a lot of fun to start learning about how to care for these new ladies.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I currently still live with my parents and siblings, since moving out is expensive and difficult these days. It's nice to be around now that we have the new birds.

(7) How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?

I discovered this app as I was scrolling through Google Play on Sunday, trying to find apps that might offer advice on chicken care. I'm looking forward to seeing the advice fellow bird-parents have to offer, and I'm grateful to see that this online-community appears to be fairly active despite how long it's been around. I look forward to learning with and from everyone!

I'm including images of the hens if anyone would like to assist in determining their breed. I'm assuming they are all the same breed as they look quite similar, but I also know very little about chickens, so it is very possible that I am mistaken.

Welcome to the group. Spend some time clicking on all the brown boxes up top - you will find some interesting things to read, some contest and photo ideas for your coop and things like that. You will see that the more you interact you get different labels - right now you are hatching- but the longer you stay you will become a Brooder.. Songster and you get points for things, so it is a lot of fun and personally I think hanging out with other chicken owners makes chicken raising more fun. It was nice of your family to rescue those chickens- they will look better as they get the nutrition and love they need. Enjoy the eggs!

Your hens are so adorable! And I love the awesome condominium your dad built for them!
I am also new to chickens so I have no idea what breed they are. I never realized how many different breeds there were until I became involved with the chicken community.
i am so happy your family rescued these chickens! With the right care they will be looking really good soon!
