Just started letting our chicken run around outside of their run. Everything still make me nervous. My husband wanted eggs, I think of them as my ladybirds and I love them. This forum has already taught me a lot. (Before I joined). Plus I appreciate how supportive and helpful everyone is. ❤️🐔❤️

Hello there and welcome to BYC! :frow

Its normal to be a bit nervous at first with chickens. They really need to come with a manual! :D Just observe them often and eventually you will be able to read their body language and know what they need. Welcome to our community!

My hens don't lay very well anymore, but they are pets. and I love my pets!

I was nervous about letting the ladies free range at first also! I also swore I would never get a rooster. Then a rooster needed a home. I will now always have a rooster! He watches out for the ladies, lets them know when a predator is near so the girls can run to the coop, and he will (I have never had this happen) but he will sacrifice himself for the protection of the ladies.
You may want to truly think about a rooster.
