I bet those chickens are pretty happy! Good job and welcome.I rescued 4 chickens (2 Isa browns, and 2 Easter Eggers, 10 month old) from an abusive situation last December. They had been kept in a 2 x 4 cage with a wire mesh bottom, fed only scratch grains, water dish was filthy and cage was disgusting and stinky, and, of course, not laying eggs. They had never free-ranged or even touched grass before. I had zero experience with chickens, but I knew I had to get them out of that situation. It took several weeks but I convinced the owner to give them to me.
From websites and chatrooms like this, I was able to learn everything I needed to know and get my girls set up in a healthy and safe living environment. They are thriving and producing lots of eggs. I have since taken on two more chicks, (1 Cinnamon Queen and 1 Creme Leghorn).
Everytime something new happens with the girls, I run to BYC site and search for other members who might be able to tell me what's going on. I have learned SO much and am grateful you all share your experiences.
