Got my babies last Friday, but sadly lost 5 (they had lost alot in the shipment). I got new babies, I now have 9 total. I believe I have 2 barred rocks, 1 Salmon Favorelle, 1 Rhode Island Red, 2 Partridge Wyandottes, 1 Easter Egger, 1 blue cochin and 1 Old English (bantam..just because I fell in love...lol) Everyone seems to be doing well (picked up the Easter Egger, Blue Cochin and the bantam today). Here are some pics (the older ones are now on shavings, the pics of them were taken right before I changed them out. I did newspaper for the first several days, changing out 3-4 times daily). Now we start the coop this weekend!

They're really cute. Congratulations!

I would try to stay away from using newspaper as bedding. The slippery surface can cause leg problems in chicks. I would switch to pine shavings (be sure to stay away from cedar shavings because of respiratory problems).

Good luck with them.

Thank you. A friend who has kept chickens (and all kinds of birds) for years said to use newspaper for the first few days to keep an eye on their poop. I changed it out very often and they seemed to not have any issues. They are on shavings now (well the ones from last week).

I am learning and appreciate all help and ideas! Love them all so much already (funny first I was only getting 6, then it turned to 8...now I have 9....I have to stay away from the store! lol

Going to start building the coop this weekend. Been looking at tons of pics of them, and know the design I want, and taking things from different coops to incorporate into ours.

My babies names are Laverne, Maxine (I originally had a 'Patty' too, as I named them after the Andrews Sisters, but sadly Patty passed), Stefanie (my daughter named her), Daisy, Ellie, Gidget, Crystal, Sapphire and Ruby.
