We finally got our new babies just in time for a tornado to pass thru but every one is fine. We got four layers (2 Orpingtons, 1 Wyandotte, and 1 Sussex) that are a week old. A friend has a silkie, Rhode Island Red, and a sex link that are a few weeks old that he would like to give to us. What are the potential problems with putting the older chicks with our new babies?
BTW, our lab loves the new babies too. She thinks they are her puppies or she is their chicken mom.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Your chicks are about a week old, and the other chicks about two weeks old? They should be OK together. You might divide the brooder into two sections for a day or two so they get used to each other but generally until chicks are around three weeks old you can add more that are about the same age without a problem.

Please keep an eye on your dog, I'm am sure she is sweet and loving but, her size alone could be an issue. She could accidentally harm or kill the chicks without meaning to . Until they are fully grown, I would supervise her when they are together.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

X2 on Kelsie's and drumstick diva's advice. Chicks this young won't really bully each other like adults would. If you put them in at night, things should work out smoothly. And like drumstick diva said, PLEASE be careful with your dog and chicks. Labs are natural bird hunter and killers.

thanks for the advice on the chicks. We're going to add 2 blue silkies to our flock. Just to reassure, the dog is supervised just as the children are and labs are retrievers not hunters and killers. All good lab owners know that it takes intensive training to get a lab to pick up a live animal. Their natural instinct is to be gentle and caring, especially the females. Thanks again.

I'm glad you joined our "flock!"

The other posters have given you some good advice. Good luck with all of your chicks!
