Hello! I’m Lori, and I’m a chicken momma to 3 Buff Orpingtons and 3 Plymouth Rocks. We’ve had them 6 days now. I have always been an animal lover, but never owned chickens. I live in Kentucky. I have an 11 year old son who is excited to finally have animals other than dogs and cats! We live on 10 acres. My husband is building a coop for them. We’re converting a large dog kennel into a run. I’m afraid to let them free range as I have a yellow lab and I have spotted a hawk hanging around our property as well. The lab has an electric fence, so she can’t get to the coop/run. I am head over heals in love with these girls!šŸ˜ I’m thankful for this group as I will need lots of advice!

Welcome! I just started our flock in February and I just love my ladies!

Hi Lori!!!! Chickens love to free range, we have four dogs, and have no issues. One time our older dog killed one, and we put her in check. She doesn't go after them anymore. Two of the dogs are labs, and love the chickens!!! Hawks shouldent bother them. We live in the country and have 4 generations of chickens, none of which have ever had a problem with hawks. We had a chicken hawk for a while, but she/he was gone in a month or so. Anyways, do what you please, just thought Id mention our experience!!!

welcome Lori to BYC your lab will get used to them and won't bother them i have 2beagles and they will lay with my crazy mixed up flock of chickens, ducks, turkey's & geese and round them up if we have to leave during the day and get them back into there coop the hawk on the other hand we put up bird netting 7ft high over most of our yard we had an owl and some hawks they got annoyed cause they couldn't get to them and left
