I've wanted chickens for years & years & FINALLY brought home 6 on Sunday.

I am having so much fun with them so far.

I have 2 RIR (my husbands personal favorite since he had 3 in college), 2 Australourpe, & 2 Plymouth Rock. So far, they're doing great, very friendly, & have learned to come & hop on my hand/arm when called. My biggest question...being a new chicken mom...is diet! What's everyone feed their new chicks, adolescents, & adults? What foods are an absolute no, no?

Hi and welcome to BYC - thanks for joining us. This search should help you, in terms of what not to feed to chickens - https://www.backyardchickens.com/newsearch?search=foods+toxic+to+chickens
"treats" should constitute no more than 10% of the total diet, but for young chicks, I'd advise giving them starter / chick feed only. Chickens need grit to break down larger food items - this link should help on the topic - https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/891051/the-science-of-feeding-grit-to-poultry

A couple of links that may help you raise your chicks:

You'll find lots of info in the Learning Centre - https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center and if you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

You may wish to consider joining your state thread as it will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area - https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread#post_3239224

Welcome!

As you have already received links to some great starting points, I will just wish you and your little ones all the best.

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out

Thank you Teila. I've been reading a wealth of info & LOVE seeing pictures of other chickens. My whole family is just thrilled with our new family members.
