Hello everyone at BYC! I'm Nesi or Nancy, a mom of 4 and a mother to many animals. I've always loved and wanted chickens and finally have them! I'm a complete newbie at this chicken game and am in need of a community of fellow chicken lovers for questions, sharing photos, and just to meet others who relate to this craziness! I:)

I'm a natural animal rescuer at heart. I hear sad stories and will cry...I currently have 4 cats, 3 indoor, 3 Turtles, and 2 goldfish. All rescues except for 1 but even she was adopted from a shelter so I also consider her a rescue. My hubby actually proposed that we finally take up backyard chickens after he talked with one of his student's mom. I had been pitching the idea of chickens to him for years! I had already invested hours, days, and possibly weeks after weeks worth of reading into the subject. So this thrilled me! We took in two mothers who each had chicks from the said student's mom, she was dealing with overcrowding and bullying. Both moms are Silkie & RIR mixes, mom was Silkie & Dad was RIR. 4 Chicks dads were barred rock and 2 were RIR. I will also have 4 silkie chicks and 1 cochin pullet, that I'm finally picking up tomorrow morning! Nesi's Nest shall be complete until next spring........maybe....we'll see. ;)

The day we brought home (2 weeks ago) One mom (Roberta) had been picked on, she had black nubs on her wings from where the roosters were pulling her feathers.

And today, after some feather regrowth (on Roberta mom of 1) and much needed down time from the boys for Aretha (mom of 5)...both moms are super relaxed and happy now. :)

I look forward to meeting everyone and to finally reply to some posts that I've already spent months reading. ;)

Welcome to BYC - so glad you've joined us. Sounds like your new girls were very lucky to have you guys come along and offer them a new home. There's not much more rewarding when it comes to chicken keeping than watching a hen raise her chicks.

Thanks for the welcome Ol Grey :) You're absolutely right! I've always heard the term "Mother hen" but now I finally see it and absolutely love it! They are so giving and very protective. It's wonderful. I am extremely excited to be play mother to my new silkie chicks though. haha!
