Hi, I'm a new mother of 5 Leghorn hens that were rescued from a factory farm. I picked them up from Animal Place in Grass Valley and I've been a bit of a fussy, nervous hen myself but my girls seem very content and have taken to the coop and their yard just fine. One of them already follows me about but carefully.

I thought they would take time to warm up being that they were factory chickens. They seem unphased by kids, dogs, and the adults, however, the appearance of a cat and they will complain heartily even though the cat is already bored with them.

I am thrilled to have them but nervous. I just want them to get along and be happy and look less scraggly and dirt with time.

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join us here! How kind of you take in some factory girls, I'm sure they are enjoying their new life with you. It sure does sound like they are :)

Good luck with them in the future and be sure to ask any questions. Everyone here to help you along the way.

Enjoy your time here on BYC and all the chicken chat :frow

Please relax and give them a chance to settle in. Sounds like they are making good progress. If you post photos of them we can suggest ways to get them looking more like happy, healthy chickens.

You may want to check them for mites or lice, and maybe worm them. I'm assuming none of this was done in their factory home. Good food, clean water, and fresh air will do a lot for their looks and personalities.

I've had them for a week now and I just adore them. They are doing great and thriving. I am amazed at how easy they are and how fast they have taken to us. They are not afraid or nervous about anything. I think they know they have landed a pretty good life here. :)
