Hi all. I have been a long time chicken lover but this will be my first time owning them….scary but fun also. Wanting any tips on starting out and best breeds to go for. Wanting social chickens who love a cuddle and good layers.
To keep them tame and make lap sitters out of them, it's best to start with chicks, handle them a lot, sit on the floor with them as week olds, (they bond with you faster, gravitate to your lap) for older birds, get yourself a bag of treats, sit down with them daily and bond with them this way.
Welcome to BYC. I have several different breeds, and I'll say that of all, the crested cream legbars and naked necks are the most consistently friendly and easily handled. Most of my brahmas are gentle and don't mind being touched, but not all. All of my bantams, but one, are lap sitter volunteers. If I sit, they hop up in my lap.
