Hey everyone - first time chicken owner. I didn’t know where to post this but looking for a bit help. If this has been discussed adnauseum somewhere else, yeah…totally cool to be point in the right direction :)

Got a Rhode Island who’s egg-bound. I can definitely feel the egg from the outside.

Just looking for some advice - this hen just does not seem interested in getting that egg out. She’s tail down, doing the penguin walk.

I’ve let her soak in warm water with epsom salt (twice now), tried upping her calcium, feeding her lots of water; tried massaging her. I’ve got her in a warm, dark room away from distractions. I’ve put some Vaseline around the vent (not inside). She’s definitely poopin’

I can’t tell, but she doesn’t seem to be in pain (she probably is!).

I’d rather not try and remove the egg myself for fear of me breaking it.

I just don’t know what else I can do to bring on contractions (again, new owner…don’t know if that’s even possible lol).

Apart from calling a vet (which would be ridiculously expensive), is there anything else I can do/try?

How old is your hen? Is her vent area bulging out? When did she last lay? How much calcium did you give her? A 300 mg tablet up to 600 mg for. 4-6 pound hen can be given once a day if egg bound. Don’t give it more than a few days. Instead of repeated soaks, place her on a warm towel and separate her, possibly in a humid or steamy bathroom.

Welcome To BYC

Can you post photos of your hen and her poop?

You're feeling the egg from "outside", is the under the vent between her legs or where do you feel the egg??

You may be feeling an egg that is laid internally or perhaps a tumor or lash material.

If she's laid internally or the material you are feeling is in the abdomen, then she's not going to be able to expel it. Sometimes if this happens, they can be hunched up and not feel well for days, then begin to feel better for a period of time. Hard to know, a lot depends on what's going on.

I agree, I'd give her Extra Calcium as suggested, make sure she's drinking well and eating her normal food. See if she does expel an egg or material. If she expels anything odd, please take photos.

I hope she feels better soon.
