Greetings from CA!

Good for you for adopting those chickens! My first chicken was a rescue too... Unfortunately sometimes animals won't make it. All you can do is try to give them the best possible care you can and don't beat yourself up too much. If you've adopted someone elses animals, you might never fully know what health problems you've inherited too.

My rescue needed delousing, worming, and a serious exercise regimen when I first got her... Good luck!

I would definately pull that carpet. Not only will it stink, it will provide a home for lice and red mites. Dusting alone wont get rid of them--you'll have to scrub the whole coop.

Are you feeding your chickens chicken feed as well? Scratch is really just candy for chickens---and it is getting to that time of year where we Arizonans should stop feeding it to them. Scratch creates heat when it is digested, and when it is hot out, it can make it hard for them to regulate their body temperature.

You may want to start freezing some of those kitchen scraps: put one day's scraps in a tupperware with some water, and toss it out to them at the hottest part of the day.

I am new to chickens so this will be my first summer with my hens. What types of things do you lik to freeze for your chickens?

You guys are all so nice. Who ever thought that so many people cared about goofy chickens! I never thought twice about them, but now they are a big part of my family. And thank you for telling me not to beat myself up when one dies. A quote from "Death to Smoochy", "You can't change the world, but you can make a dent!

I thought that my chickens were getting scratch, but it is actually wild bird seed. I asked the feed store dude about what to feed them and he said that bird seed is okay. Maybe out here they don't take chicken raising all that serious and anything is better than nothing.

I still have an egg that Cracker, the one that just died, laid on the 2nd of this month in the fridge. I took it out and put it in a nest. I have decided not to collect eggs for human consumption for awhile to see if the girls will hatch some chicks. I can't bring myself to eat Cracker's egg so I hope maybe it will hatch. I thought about trying to incubate is myself, but I think that I will let nature take its course.

Thank you all again. Maybe in 21 days I will be able to show you a picture of Cracker Jr. I just hope it's not a boy!

Kitty
