Welcome to BYC from California wine country in the Western Sierra Foothills!

Love those first eggs.

Every day, I thank the hens in the coop when I gather eggs. The specific hen(s) might not be in the coop when I gather, but odds are they'll all get to hear my appreciation at some time. ;)

Completely safe to eat the first egg. In fact, that first egg is always the best tasting one

am i right also with what i have read that they lay for 6 and off for 1 ? or is that not a set in stone thing for new laying young birds?

It's more like every 25 hours, though that's definitely not set in stone especially depending on the breed and age of the hen. We actually have a Polish hen that lays only a dozen eggs in a year
hmm.png

Since yours are young, egg laying might be a little sporadic in the beginning.

Well the 7th day came and went, it laid but it were soft shelled... but then on the 8th day..
Yep you guessed it...a Double Yolker!!
[rule] I'm have a problem also?? been feeding them Layers Pellets since 19 weeks, as directed by the chicken farmer i bought the hens from. (bought the pellets when i picked up the chickens) the chicken farmer said he feeds them this.. 27 wks go by... one chicken starts to lay...and now they dont eat the pellets? think i have broken my chickens.....? I bought a 5kg bag of mixed corn last week with a ball feeder toy and meal worm... now the little sods wont eat the pellet? i stopped giving them corn yesterday, they have been given it a several times over the weekend... i say giving..but it wasn't in the main feeder or to (feed them) just a small sprinkle on the ground to treat them with the toy, something to keep them occupied and to mix it up abit... i think it holds about 60 grams when full?? how do i make them eat the pellet , (it is in a 3kg bottom ring hopper) same as their water and they are drinking.. i checked and watched .. even put the pellet in the toy , sprinkled it on the ground i did change the feed as could'nt get the same food from the farmer, but bought another brand of layers pellets from a closer farm nr me... they have eaten just under half a 25kg bag todate of the new brand bag so whats going on? an ideas? Ian x Update: 3 eggs today! 2 more hens are laying and there sort of eating again? Still don't know whats wrong I'll put the pic up tomorrow
