I was very excited to get my chickens. My husband was reluctant at first but is now happy we have them. I bought 6 chickens from the first person I talked to. I didn't do my homework (stupid me) and I bought them from a guy who had over-crowded backyard coops. He said that 4 of the 6 were laying. I was stoked! I had 2 full grown Delawares, 2 supposedly full grown brown leghorns, and 2 supposed Cochin that were 4 months old. I got home, put my chickens in the coop, and within the 1st hour 1 of my Delawares died. I called the guy who sold it to me and he said that he'd never heard of such a thing and offered to sell me a new one. I passed thinking I got a sick chicken. Within a day, the other Delaware died. I chalked that one up to it's partner dying. Then a few weeks later, my brown leghorn started pecking at my babies. Needless to say, they ended up dying too :-( I still have my 2 brown leghorns, they are holding strong since the end of May. The one that was pecking the babies has now lost all of her tai. Feathers, but doesn't have a bald spot. It looks like someone just cut her feathers. These 2 were supposed egg layers, yet still no eggs. Could this be a sign they are getting ready to lay? I have a suspicion that they aren't yet fill grown either.

If you post some photos we could better advise you. I would steer clear of this guy, maybe the two that died had some illness or disease that could spread to your others. Putting young chicks in with older birds does usually end up with dismal results. They have to be integrated to the flock gradually . I wonder if the hens he sold you are really hens. If you post clear, closeup photos of side view and front (showing comb) on "what gender or breed is this." You may discover the truth on your birds.

You may wand to check out The Learning Center and also threads on Flock management.

Sorry you had such a bad first experience. Like the drumstick diva said, stay clear of this guy! Hopefully, with help from the BYC community, things will get better for you and your chickens now. Folks are friendly here and will help guide you.
