I like the idea of raising my own chickens for eggs and having them as pets with names. Unfortunately my neighbors are not as excited. Chicken ordinance in Akron, Ohio states coop must be 100 feet from any dwelling. My lot is deep and I have neighbors on both sides. Will be doing some measuring today. One neighbor in particular is giving me a hard time. He has called our council person who has told him that by me having chickens it will lower his property value! He will be calling zoning department to check out the 100' rule. I have the coop and have started putting the run together. Stalled at this time until I come up with some answers. I am looking to meet with other potential chicken owners in Akron to see if we can change the 100' rule to 75'.

Wish we could put all the PITA neighbors on an island where they would just complain and rant and rave to each other.

If you are allowed to have them I'd build their coop exactly 100 feet, 1 inch from the property line!! Good luck to you!

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan :D

You might let the council person know that unless he has figures to back up his interesting statement regarding property values, you may need to have a lawyer look into it to see if he is infringing on your rights as a property owner by making unfounded statements in his official capacity.
