My 2 chickens are now 18 weeks, I got them at 2 days old. I have found the info on this page to be SO helpful in this fun journey so thank you! They free range in my backyard and go into their coop by themselves every evening at exactly 7:45 pm. Louise is a Brown Leghorn & T 2 is a Ameraucana. The dogs love them so they have fit in great with my animal family. They absolutely refuse to be picked up but will come when called, and they hang out with me when I am on the patio. I read that both of these breeds are not into being held so I assuming that's the reason......but my other friends that have chickens are always picking theirs up.....Their favorite treats are tomatoes, corn on the cob and they go completely nuts over cooked quinoa. I never realized that chickens were so much fun just to watch, they are bring me such joy. I got chickens as I wanted to be sure that any eggs I ate were coming from happy, well cared for chickens. Also, they refuse to roost at night and I have just given up on that....I just let them do what they want. Thanks again for this site. Lori

Chickens are great entertainers aren't they? And, the eggs are a delightful bonus!

I get a bit jealous of folks whose chickens like to be held.

I have 19 hens of various breeds. Only ONE wants to be held, and she's the accidental house chicken. Another, my Speckled Sussex, allows me to pet her, and everyone else just tolerates me because of the food and treats. They certainly come running when they believe there's something in it for them! Still, I adore the self-centered things!

Welcome to BYC, Lori. It's good to have you here!
