Just wanted to say hi to everyone here, this is the first time i have owned chickens. We had rabbits for a while but they mysteriously passed away about a year ago. We live in the country and i suspect the area was "treated" for rabbits. . . Since we buy a lot of eggs and know that chickens are a bit heartier, we thought we would invest in a few. I'm not sure of the breed, mixed i guess, we have 5 and i've grown fond of the black one as she has a lovely shade of green tinge in her feathers. she lays green/blue eggs, unlike the others which are always white. she has a black beak and slender head and when she runs, she keeps her head down and looks like a dragster
hence my username!
I came across the forum while researching whether or not lime might be harmful or not as the farm we live on has been leased now and the new owner is planting the whole lot in maze. they have just completely covered our place in lime yesterday. luckily they were in the coup as we were planning an overnight trip, but have just let them out now. looks like we should be safe with the lime around the area. it's interesting to see that others use lime to control smell from other animals too. that's handy to know.
anyway nice to meet everyone.
